00:00:00.550 --> 00:00:03.189
Hello and welcome to queer goggles.

00:00:03.220 --> 00:00:06.490
This is Nick Vargas with the source LGBT plus center.

00:00:06.700 --> 00:00:19.390
And today we are talking to Jared Rubio about his experience in the youth leadership academy and also what it was like to grow up gay black and with the lesbian mom here in the central valley.

00:00:31.269 --> 00:00:31.269
[inaudible]

00:00:34.299 --> 00:00:35.020
hi Jared.

00:00:35.049 --> 00:00:36.700
Thank you for being here this morning.

00:00:36.820 --> 00:00:37.299
Of course.

00:00:37.301 --> 00:00:39.159
Thank you for having me today.

00:00:39.161 --> 00:00:43.810
I want to talk to you a little bit about your experience in the youth leadership academy.

00:00:44.350 --> 00:00:57.729
Uh, your experience growing up here in the central valley, which is a very unique, by the way, and you know, so with that, please tell the audience a little bit about yourself, your name, pronouns, uh, whatever you want to share for the moment.

00:00:57.829 --> 00:00:59.299
My name is Jared Rubio.

00:00:59.609 --> 00:01:03.679
My pronouns are, he, him has, and I just turned 21 recently.

00:01:03.950 --> 00:01:04.459
Yeah, last month.

00:01:04.609 --> 00:01:04.609
Yeah.

00:01:04.670 --> 00:01:04.969
Yeah.

00:01:05.030 --> 00:01:05.900
Congratulations.

00:01:05.900 --> 00:01:06.459
They say pull.

00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:06.920
Yes.

00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:10.950
And so tell me, how do you identify?

00:01:11.780 --> 00:01:14.819
Um, I identify as a gay man.

00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:15.359
Yeah.

00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:16.000
Gay System

00:01:16.269 --> 00:01:24.569
and man and for the audience because we, uh, they can't see you describe your background, your ethnic background.

00:01:24.840 --> 00:01:26.519
I consider myself biracial.

00:01:26.849 --> 00:01:30.359
I'm, I'm Afro Latino, so I'm black and Mexican.

00:01:30.750 --> 00:01:32.159
My mom is Mexican.

00:01:32.161 --> 00:01:33.810
I grew up in a Mexican household.

00:01:34.010 --> 00:01:36.870
And, but when people see me, it's like I present as black.

00:01:37.409 --> 00:01:42.989
So can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to grow up with these different identities?

00:01:43.189 --> 00:01:50.280
So, and, and, and what ages did you become aware of how you were different than, than other kids?

00:01:50.281 --> 00:01:59.250
So like for, for me, I, you know, identifying as Mexican was one thing and later experiencing my gay self was a different, but how, what would that experience like for you

00:01:59.849 --> 00:02:00.540
growing up?

00:02:01.079 --> 00:02:10.680
Um, I definitely felt the pressure of being a biracial in that I could be too black for Mexicans.

00:02:10.681 --> 00:02:12.000
I grew up in a Mexican household.

00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:18.930
Um, I can be too black, uh, for the Mexican community and two Mexican for the black community.

00:02:19.199 --> 00:02:22.590
So it was very, like I did have to find my place.

00:02:23.639 --> 00:02:27.539
Um, and then plus on top of that I was sprinkled with gay.

00:02:27.750 --> 00:02:36.030
So, um, there's definitely like a little bit of a journey that I had to go in to myself and to be secure growing up.

00:02:36.031 --> 00:02:40.110
I remember, uh, I was always like a smart kid.

00:02:40.110 --> 00:02:54.960
That guy was always in a extracurricular activities, um, honors programs for school and I re I recognize really fast that I was one of the only black people in these classes.

00:02:56.009 --> 00:03:01.400
Um, but I didn't let it like, uh, put me or I didn't doubt myself.

00:03:01.401 --> 00:03:03.289
I felt like this is where I needed to be.

00:03:03.650 --> 00:03:10.669
I'm on the right path and I was always like taught by my family and that like you should pursue the best for yourself.

00:03:10.670 --> 00:03:12.560
And so that's definitely what I wanted to do.

00:03:13.550 --> 00:03:13.909
Great.

00:03:14.120 --> 00:03:14.719
Oh, that's wonderful.

00:03:14.721 --> 00:03:18.830
And so speaking of your family, so you, you have an interesting background.

00:03:18.830 --> 00:03:20.789
So your, your mom's Mexican, yeah.

00:03:20.840 --> 00:03:27.020
And your father's black and your mom also has something else, right?

00:03:27.020 --> 00:03:27.289
Entity.

00:03:27.319 --> 00:03:27.979
Yes, definitely.

00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:28.729
Yeah.

00:03:28.730 --> 00:03:32.360
My mom, um, she is a lesbian.

00:03:32.389 --> 00:03:36.919
She actually came out I think a year or two before I did.

00:03:37.400 --> 00:03:40.189
So that was an interesting thing to go through.

00:03:40.409 --> 00:03:41.280
Tell, tell us about that.

00:03:41.281 --> 00:03:44.099
How did that conversation go or with that day like,

00:03:44.620 --> 00:04:03.490
um, so my mom was with my stepdad and they had, they had separated and, uh, I very much, I, I believe like in the early parts of my freshman to sophomore year of high school, um, I saw her going out more.

00:04:03.491 --> 00:04:09.370
I saw her, um, um, she was just like living her life, being a single woman.

00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:32.470
Um, and it wasn't until like if she would bring a woman home like here and there that, um, we noticed that that's, we notice that something's different, you know, and later on she did come out to my family and it was something that was a relief for me being in the closet at the time because I was like, this is going to be so much easier for me now.

00:04:32.471 --> 00:04:33.120
Like, okay.

00:04:33.399 --> 00:04:43.300
Um, but also like, it was good to have that because, um, to have like someone who understands like what I was going through, what I was feeling.

00:04:43.720 --> 00:04:45.370
So I thought that was very comforting.

00:04:46.180 --> 00:04:52.509
Um, my uncle, her older, her younger brother, my mom's the oldest, um, in her family, uh, he's gay.

00:04:52.511 --> 00:04:56.079
So he's actually the one who led the path first.

00:04:56.081 --> 00:04:57.459
He took everything.

00:04:57.819 --> 00:05:03.879
He was definitely, um, yeah, he was definitely set the pace for everyone.

00:05:04.449 --> 00:05:12.490
Um, so I think I like commend him a lot for taking all of that, what it is to come out, especially when he did at a young age.

00:05:13.329 --> 00:05:16.930
Um, so I think it was easier for my mom and then easiest for me.

00:05:17.459 --> 00:05:17.459
Huh.

00:05:18.050 --> 00:05:18.680
That's great.

00:05:18.680 --> 00:05:19.910
And that's how it usually works.

00:05:20.029 --> 00:05:26.300
And families in my family, my younger cousin came out and then I came out and then now half my family's gay.

00:05:26.810 --> 00:05:31.850
Yeah, no, not really, but that's great for those trailblazers in the families.

00:05:32.420 --> 00:05:34.879
So now how old are you?

00:05:35.089 --> 00:05:35.930
I'm 21.

00:05:36.170 --> 00:05:36.740
Okay.

00:05:36.769 --> 00:05:37.889
And Yeah.

00:05:37.970 --> 00:05:40.110
Your education wise, what are you doing?

00:05:40.160 --> 00:05:40.910
What are your plans?

00:05:41.209 --> 00:05:47.509
Okay, so, uh, I go to cos right now, um, I'm, yeah, like I said, I'm 21.

00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:51.500
Um, I'm about to graduate in next month.

00:05:52.310 --> 00:05:55.670
Uh, I got into Long Beach, that's where I want to go to school.

00:05:55.699 --> 00:05:56.540
Congratulations.

00:05:56.540 --> 00:05:57.439
Thank you much.

00:05:57.440 --> 00:06:02.209
I'm a communications major and I want to um, uh, go into entertainment.

00:06:02.329 --> 00:06:04.939
So I want to do something like around with music.

00:06:05.329 --> 00:06:05.930
So

00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:14.129
earlier you mentioned that you've noticed that in your honors classes and other classes, you were the only black kid, biracial kid.

00:06:14.610 --> 00:06:18.569
Has that been the same at higher education at Cos?

00:06:19.079 --> 00:06:19.709
I would say

00:06:19.800 --> 00:06:20.790
yes and no.

00:06:20.790 --> 00:06:26.009
Like I definitely did see a lot more diversity at cos I was on the cos track team.

00:06:26.011 --> 00:06:35.129
So that's where I was definitely exposed to more, um, uh, to more mixed or black people like myself.

00:06:35.970 --> 00:06:44.670
Um, which I did kind of not go through like an identity crisis of not knowing who I was, but not knowing it's different side of me.

00:06:44.670 --> 00:06:50.759
It's like I definitely knew the Latino part of me really well cause I grew up in the culture.

00:06:51.550 --> 00:07:08.189
Um, but it wasn't until like I was surrounded by a lot more, um, black people, a lot of my teammates, um, coming from actually like places like Nigeria and stuff that really opened my eyes to like, I needed to educate myself more on this type of culture.

00:07:08.430 --> 00:07:11.730
So, um, it was definitely eyeopening bet.

00:07:11.939 --> 00:07:17.350
I did my homework and I gained friends, which I thought was really good.

00:07:17.430 --> 00:07:18.360
It did teach a lot.

00:07:18.449 --> 00:07:23.339
It did teach me a lot of a part of myself that I wanted to go further into.

00:07:23.850 --> 00:07:25.230
Now how does your gay I

00:07:25.939 --> 00:07:26.930
intersect with those.

00:07:26.930 --> 00:07:27.459
Yes.

00:07:28.089 --> 00:07:38.149
Um, and that's very interesting, especially growing up in the valley because there is, uh, is there is a, an okay gay population here.

00:07:39.259 --> 00:07:43.759
Um, but being gay here in the valley, it's been good to me actually.

00:07:44.420 --> 00:07:46.129
Um, which I'm very blessed to say.

00:07:46.130 --> 00:07:57.110
When I came out, um, I actually came out, uh, the day after the a burger fell versus Hodges, a supreme court ruling of same sex marriage to be legalized.

00:07:57.709 --> 00:08:00.829
And, um, I came out the next day on Twitter.

00:08:01.350 --> 00:08:02.899
We happened to get married with that.

00:08:03.620 --> 00:08:08.329
No, I just, I actually, Eh, uh, it gave me the extra like courage that I needed.

00:08:09.019 --> 00:08:14.060
Um, I think to give me that push that I needed to finally come out.

00:08:14.060 --> 00:08:18.889
I felt very like patriotic and happy to be a gay man at that time.

00:08:19.370 --> 00:08:23.060
So, yeah, I, I wrote a little paragraph.

00:08:24.110 --> 00:08:25.699
Um, I came out on Twitter.

00:08:26.170 --> 00:08:36.529
Um, I got so much love from friends, from family, from people, from different schools, from my teammates, from football players, from water polo players.

00:08:37.610 --> 00:08:41.840
Um, it was just a very loving time and not that it's a time that I was very grateful for.

00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:52.730
Um, and my mom the next day actually, she told me if I wanted to go to San Francisco pride too to go with her and her friends.

00:08:53.240 --> 00:08:58.690
And I was like, yes, like of like I would love to go and this is before I had to come out to her so much.

00:08:59.059 --> 00:09:04.100
I was just like, obviously like she knows that I was going to tell her on the way up there.

00:09:05.070 --> 00:09:07.519
We're driving up to Fresno to meet her friends.

00:09:08.720 --> 00:09:10.940
Uh, and it was pretty funny.

00:09:10.941 --> 00:09:16.639
I was like deejaying my coming out, like setting the mood, um, picking the right song.

00:09:17.659 --> 00:09:19.039
I'm very theatrical that way.

00:09:19.570 --> 00:09:25.549
Uh, I was, I, when it came to that moment though, I was like looking out the windows stalling.

00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:30.799
Um, and I would look to her and she'd be like, what?

00:09:30.801 --> 00:09:32.090
Like, what are you wet?

00:09:32.600 --> 00:09:44.779
And I'd just be like, nothing, nothing, nothing like, and finally I gained the courage and I was like, I came out to my friends, I came out on Twitter yesterday and she was like, no, you didn't.

00:09:45.120 --> 00:09:52.429
And then, uh, me having to like, uh, justify myself, it took all my inhibitions away and I was like, yes, I did look.

00:09:52.460 --> 00:09:56.389
And like she read it like while she was driving, don't do that.

00:09:56.860 --> 00:10:00.809
Um, but she read it while she was driving and, uh, she was like, aw.

00:10:00.909 --> 00:10:04.159
And she was like, and she turned to me and she's like, you know, I always known, right?

00:10:04.160 --> 00:10:07.429
Like, and I was just like, of course like a mother knows.

00:10:07.789 --> 00:10:09.940
But, um, yeah.

00:10:10.029 --> 00:10:13.789
And we went to pride together, which was really special, was my first pride.

00:10:13.850 --> 00:10:16.730
So, um, yeah, I really loved that experience.

00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:24.700
So you came out there is the marriage decision and you go to gay pride with your lesbian mom, all that sort of stuff.

00:10:25.460 --> 00:10:26.690
It was very eventful.

00:10:26.809 --> 00:10:28.580
That's a once in a lifetime experience.

00:10:28.581 --> 00:10:29.210
That's great.

00:10:29.629 --> 00:10:33.259
What does it like to be a gay guy here?

00:10:33.260 --> 00:10:37.190
A young gay guy, biracial, living in the central valley.

00:10:37.191 --> 00:10:38.539
How do you meet others?

00:10:39.830 --> 00:10:47.389
Um, I would say if apart from school, like I know two of my best gay friends, um, I've met them.

00:10:49.190 --> 00:10:55.309
I think I met them through like the social, like party scene, like going through high school, like going to high school parties.

00:10:56.240 --> 00:10:58.610
Um, both of them were from different schools actually too.

00:10:58.940 --> 00:11:01.009
Both of them were from two different schools.

00:11:01.010 --> 00:11:03.259
One Redwood, one LD.

00:11:03.919 --> 00:11:11.269
Um, and I don't know actually how we interconnected, it's just like all gays, young gays know each other, um, in the valley.

00:11:11.779 --> 00:11:16.009
Um, and then we just linked up and I went to Pry, I went to a different pride with them, La Pride.

00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:20.090
Um, and now they've turned into like my tribe here.

00:11:20.091 --> 00:11:23.990
So, um, I think that was really, I loved that.

00:11:24.529 --> 00:11:35.779
Um, but to me, other gay guys, apart from, uh, like using social apps, I felt like Grindr, um, and like Tinder and stuff like that.

00:11:36.360 --> 00:11:44.389
Um, I've met, I feel like some of them I've met really close, um, friends who I still talk to every day.

00:11:45.049 --> 00:11:47.000
Um, but it is definitely a lot harder.

00:11:47.029 --> 00:12:08.120
I, um, especially if we're talking like Romantically, um, I've never been in a relationship and I'm 21, uh, I've definitely tried here and there, but I feel like, um, here in the valley, like the, the mindset or the pickings are a little rough around the edges sometimes.

00:12:09.289 --> 00:12:13.490
Um, so, uh, I definitely try not to settle.

00:12:14.480 --> 00:12:17.450
Um, so yeah, that's been an interesting thing.

00:12:17.451 --> 00:12:20.419
That's what, uh, I'm looking forward to.

00:12:20.421 --> 00:12:26.090
I know you and Brian have talked about um, living your big gay life in a big city.

00:12:26.320 --> 00:12:26.320
Yeah.

00:12:26.360 --> 00:12:31.399
So that's something that I'm looking forward to in at when I leave off to long beach.

00:12:31.519 --> 00:12:31.789
Yeah.

00:12:31.791 --> 00:12:40.759
You are going to be in for quite an experience and I resonate with your comments about the pickings are slim here in the central valley.

00:12:41.330 --> 00:12:43.460
Even all the old gays know each other.

00:12:43.549 --> 00:12:44.059
Yes.

00:12:44.659 --> 00:12:52.610
You know, when everybody is either, you know, taken unavailable, I feel really lucky to have a dean.

00:12:52.889 --> 00:12:57.799
Yes, it's, but it's a process going through them and it's been a progression.

00:12:57.801 --> 00:13:10.220
So when I was growing up, it was before the Internet, before, so, uh, the Internet came out, you know, in a big way with think AOL chat rooms when I was in college and I started to meet people that way.

00:13:10.669 --> 00:13:27.190
And now people, uh, in college, you know, they have apps, they have other ways of meeting people and yeah, the, the apps can be a great way to meet local gay guys, but it can also come with, you know, some drawbacks.

00:13:27.289 --> 00:13:29.779
W what's your experience been like on that?

00:13:29.780 --> 00:13:33.679
What have been some stories that stand out good or, or bad?

00:13:34.340 --> 00:13:35.720
Like I've tried different routes.

00:13:35.721 --> 00:13:36.379
I've tried.

00:13:37.490 --> 00:13:41.090
Um, I've tried GSS, uh, at Cos, at my college.

00:13:42.200 --> 00:13:48.740
Um, and it's just, uh, a different, I would say type of people that I'm looking for.

00:13:49.730 --> 00:14:07.279
Um, and I would say like using apps like grinder or Tinder, um, that they help you really kind of scope who you want, who like who you, who is similar to you and who has similar tastes and to be friend or something more.

00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:12.889
Um, so we have a broad audience here at queer goggles.

00:14:13.309 --> 00:14:16.129
So tell us, tell our audience, who are you looking for?

00:14:16.130 --> 00:14:16.970
What's your ideal guy?

00:14:16.971 --> 00:14:21.620
Like my ideal guy, I would say smart.

00:14:22.460 --> 00:14:24.320
Um, he has to have a good sense of humor.

00:14:25.070 --> 00:14:26.210
I don't really go by race.

00:14:26.211 --> 00:14:30.769
I, I w I'm interested in learning everything I do.

00:14:30.770 --> 00:14:38.720
Like I guess I do tend to like older, um, because I feel as if I'm mature for my pretty mature, for my age.

00:14:39.110 --> 00:14:45.139
Guys around my age don't seem to have it together as much as, um, I'd like them to.

00:14:45.620 --> 00:14:49.159
But yeah, so I'd say like about those things.

00:14:49.639 --> 00:14:50.419
That's great.

00:14:50.421 --> 00:14:52.279
So speaking maturity

00:14:52.279 --> 00:15:00.470
for your age, that's one of the things that we noticed when we interviewed you for the Source Youth Leadership Academy is that you had your stuff together.

00:15:01.009 --> 00:15:02.720
You, you still talk to us.

00:15:03.409 --> 00:15:04.789
Well, you did well on the interview.

00:15:05.330 --> 00:15:08.360
I got this far right and you've been, you've been great.

00:15:08.360 --> 00:15:11.659
We've, we've loved having you, uh, in the program.

00:15:12.110 --> 00:15:15.259
So how did you find out about the Youth Leadership Academy?

00:15:16.450 --> 00:15:21.470
Um, I actually, um, my other, my gay friend Josh, he's actually been through the program.

00:15:21.471 --> 00:15:22.700
I think you guys know him well.

00:15:23.600 --> 00:15:45.220
Um, he actually put me on to your guys's, um, flyer that, um, to apply and he was, um, I actually even, I actually think maybe I might have reached out to him too, cause I, I saw that he was in a group of this, this leadership academy.

00:15:45.259 --> 00:15:54.559
I saw his Instagram pictures and that he was going to different places with different types of people, um, in our community.

00:15:54.561 --> 00:15:56.210
And I was just like, wow, that's really cool.

00:15:56.211 --> 00:15:57.529
Like how do I do that?

00:15:57.530 --> 00:16:12.649
You know, cause I'm all about meeting new people and learning about the different identities and I really want to want and to um, seasoned myself and learn more, um, about other, other people under the umbrella.

00:16:13.639 --> 00:16:16.370
Um, and have you, yes, I definitely have.

00:16:16.370 --> 00:16:25.159
And that's really one of my motives for applying, I'm actually on my own was I wanted to learn from different people.

00:16:25.160 --> 00:16:41.269
I wanted to meet and learn how, just walk in other people's shoes and especially because of a lot of the things that are going on with trans, with Trans Rights, with um, lesbian, gay issues.

00:16:41.270 --> 00:16:45.889
And I definitely wanted to, to, to just be more worldly.

00:16:45.890 --> 00:16:49.519
And what are some of your favorite memories from the academy?

00:16:50.179 --> 00:16:53.539
Learning about, uh, the AIDS epidemic.

00:16:53.779 --> 00:17:14.269
That one was really, even though it was a little somber to watch it, it, it really ignited something I think in all of us watching that night, um, because a lot of us didn't know what these gay men, women had to go through, um, in order to survive.

00:17:14.779 --> 00:17:24.289
And it was really inspiring to watch them march to watch them educate themselves on legislation because no one else was going to do it.

00:17:25.369 --> 00:17:34.130
Um, and so me being in the leadership academy, I feel like it really just made me feel like I'm doing the right thing.

00:17:34.131 --> 00:17:40.910
Being here, I'm, I'm, um, taking the steps to become a leader like them.

00:17:42.079 --> 00:17:45.740
Um, and so yeah, that's one that was one of my favorite things

00:17:46.140 --> 00:17:46.500
for me.

00:17:46.500 --> 00:18:00.119
It's really inspiring to see how a, like the needs crisis can galvanize our community to take action and to use that action to make real benefits for our community.

00:18:00.930 --> 00:18:03.109
Like that's unfortunate.

00:18:03.480 --> 00:18:08.009
It's a horrible tragedy that we lost so many men during that time.

00:18:08.519 --> 00:18:19.950
That experience also made the gay community strong today and taught us how to fight for our rights, how to march in the streets, how to talk to legislatures, how to take care of ourselves and each other.

00:18:20.460 --> 00:18:28.950
So, speaking of the future and going to Long Beach State, what do you, do you want to major in communications?

00:18:28.951 --> 00:18:31.529
What an entertainment, what would your ideal job be?

00:18:31.530 --> 00:18:34.230
What do you want to do five, 10 years out?

00:18:35.470 --> 00:18:38.079
Uh, I definitely, I see a couple of things.

00:18:38.769 --> 00:18:45.940
Um, one of my, I guess aspirations is, um, I see myself being, because I love music.

00:18:45.941 --> 00:18:52.569
I love going to different festivals and see, I love seeing different artists live.

00:18:52.570 --> 00:18:56.710
It just is very riveting to me.

00:18:57.849 --> 00:19:09.849
Um, so I see myself going into entertainment, focusing on music, being something of like a venue manager to where I bring in these artists, um, to play.

00:19:10.690 --> 00:19:28.990
Uh, certain locations or that I'm just like the man behind the scenes, you know, and I actually choreograph these amazing experiences that the ones that I walked into and I looked around and I've immediately like fell in love and it's just a different experience.

00:19:28.990 --> 00:19:35.230
Like it's literally making an experience, making an a vibe that I've been addicted to.

00:19:35.230 --> 00:19:41.049
So, um, I've definitely would want to put my hand in that and try, try that out.

00:19:41.920 --> 00:19:53.740
Um, I've also thought about, um, working for like an app working for like a music app, working for a different type of app, um, social app, um, things like that.

00:19:53.740 --> 00:19:58.480
But yeah, definitely my first choice would be, um, in music.

00:19:58.890 --> 00:19:59.819
It's wonderful.

00:20:00.269 --> 00:20:02.279
You are a bright young guy.

00:20:02.609 --> 00:20:05.640
We've really enjoyed having you and the youth leadership academy.

00:20:06.059 --> 00:20:08.400
You are going to be successful.

00:20:08.720 --> 00:20:13.559
We, we know this and we wish you well, you know, in, in your future and what you're gonna do.

00:20:13.560 --> 00:20:18.599
You're gonna make us proud and hopefully you'll come and see us here in Visalia, sunlight, of course.

00:20:18.601 --> 00:20:19.509
And I would just like to think

00:20:19.549 --> 00:20:27.500
you and Brian, um, for being just staples in our community of, uh, starting everything.

00:20:27.789 --> 00:20:29.569
Um, honestly I wouldn't be here.

00:20:29.599 --> 00:20:31.400
We wouldn't be here without youtube.

00:20:31.799 --> 00:20:32.190
Thank you.

00:20:32.191 --> 00:20:33.509
I appreciate that.

00:20:33.690 --> 00:20:40.259
So, Jared, if you had advice for young LGBT kids out there listening right now, what would that be?

00:20:41.299 --> 00:20:48.750
Um, I would definitely say, uh, do what I did, um, later.

00:20:48.750 --> 00:20:51.420
I did what I did at 18 when I did.

00:20:51.660 --> 00:21:00.779
Uh, I think I applied for this, uh, 20, um, is educate yourself and get involved really in your community.

00:21:01.769 --> 00:21:09.420
Um, bind LGBT, uh, whether it be in your high school GSA, um, or your college GSA.

00:21:09.630 --> 00:21:14.519
Just get involved, um, with things and learn about other people.

00:21:15.539 --> 00:21:17.670
Um, learn about other people in the community.

00:21:18.660 --> 00:21:41.039
Um, find ways to help because, uh, like I said, I came out when I was 18, so it could have, I could only imagine knowing what I know now at a younger age, um, could have like saved me just a lot more, saved me a lot of confusion, a lot of, um, insecurities, you know.

00:21:41.700 --> 00:21:47.250
Um, but I feel like learning that now I feel, uh, I feel like I'm grounded.

00:21:47.250 --> 00:21:50.279
I feel really good about who I am as a person.

00:21:51.269 --> 00:21:52.710
Um, and I feel very secure in that.

00:21:52.711 --> 00:21:57.750
And that's a beautiful thing to have and, uh, I'm really happy.

00:21:57.839 --> 00:21:59.160
So that's great.

00:21:59.309 --> 00:22:03.069
Those are great words of wisdom from a talented young man, folks.

00:22:03.230 --> 00:22:04.799
That's all the time we have for today.

00:22:05.220 --> 00:22:16.920
If you've liked what you've heard on queer goggles, please help us continue to do what we do and have great guests like Jared, by donating@thesourcelgbt.org slash donate.
